Governor Jenniffer González has declared a state of emergency in response to escalating coastal erosion along Puerto Rico’s northern shoreline. This decision aims to expedite protective measures to safeguard both natural resources and vulnerable communities.
The northern coast has experienced significant erosion due to rising sea levels and storm surges, leading to infrastructural damage and community evacuations, particularly in areas like Loíza. The executive order is intended to accelerate projects that will protect these regions from further harm.
This announcement comes just ahead of the Atlantic hurricane season, which begins on June 1. The financial cost of the proposed erosion control projects has not yet been determined.
